InterCommunity 2017 – Celebrating Internet Society’s 25th Anniversary across the globe in 24 hours

InterCommunity 2017 – Internet Society 25th Anniversary celebration looking 25 years back and looking into the Future of the Internet.

Based on the experiences of the 2 purposefully designed previous editions of InterCommunity 2015 and 2016 the Internet Society wanted to celebrate its 25th Anniversary by engaging its stakeholders for the Internet on the Internet.

Collectively the teams at Internet Society and Event Design Collective designed a series of events which culminated in this global celebration of the Internet on 19 September 2017.

According to Kathy Brown, President & CEO of the Internet Society, “2017 is a special year for our community, marking 25 years of advocacy for an open, trusted Internet available to everyone, everywhere. We used this milestone year to shine the light on everyday heroes using the Internet and bring attention to the 2017 Internet Hall of Fame inductees. And, InterCommunity – our 3rd global, hybrid membership meeting – was designed to allow Internet Society members space for constructive dialogue, connection, and celebration.”

InterCommunity is the Internet Society’s annual member meeting. Launched in 2015, the hybrid format brings the community together online and in-person for robust conversations about the issues and topics most relevant to us.

InterCommunity kicked-off with the live presentation of the 2017 Internet Hall of Fame induction ceremony. In its fourth year, the Internet Hall of Fame celebrates the extraordinary people who helped to make the Internet what it is today.

Following the ceremony, we passed the InterCommunity program to the Interactive Regional Nodes around the world for a lively discussion on the critical factors that will shape the future Internet. The conversations focused on key findings from the 2017 Global Internet Report that launched on Monday 18 September just prior to the event.

InterCommunity concluded back in Los Angeles with a Closing Roundtable discussion featuring public policy experts, Internet Hall of Fame inductees and next generation Internet leaders. The panelists shared their unique perspectives and discuss how the community can advance the recommendations for the future Internet we all want.

The full experience journey was documented on a giant visual which kept track of the conversation as it progressed from Los Angeles to Tokyo, Singapore, Brisbane, New Delhi, Mauritius, Johannesburg, Cairo, Beirut, Istanbul, Geneva, Lisbon, Dakar, Montevideo, Guadalajara, New York and back to Los Angeles where 25 under 25 next generation Internet leaders concluded the conversation. In conclusion, Nicole Armstrong, CMP, CMM, CED, Director Stakeholder Relations at the Internet Society in charge of the Event Design and project shares: “Using the Event Design process for InterCommunity was key to its success.  The Event Canvas methodology allowed us to create an event that was responsive to our stakeholder needs and desires.”

This celebration was only possible thanks to the community of the Internet Society across 56 celebration nodes and 15 interactive  nodes connected to the #icomm17 Studio in Brussels and the Internet Hall of Fame celebrations in Los Angeles.
